Everywhere you look, you see people glued to their phones, whether they are scrolling deep on Instagram, taking pictures to post on Snapchat, or updating their status on Facebook. It seems that the world has moved to an online platform, where communication and interaction have become strictly digital. In an age where social media has become such a prominent part of our society, it makes sense that companies are becoming more reliant on social media marketing. With Instagram and TikTok each accumulating over 1 billion users respectively, many companies have found that they are able to reach large audiences and…

Pride Month this year coincided with the massive resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the Netflix documentary Disclosure effectively demonstrates how racism, homophobia, and transphobia are all linked and show up in similar situations. The documentary explains how transphobia appears in movies and TV shows in ways that go unnoticed by cisgender people.

The people who are in power in our society, primarily cisgender white men, promote stereotypical gender expression and the belief that sex has to reflect gender expression, ideas which are toxic to trans people who don’t conform to the gender society assigns…

As youth, it can often feel like we are alienated from the political sphere and don’t have access to the levers of power; however, this is an illusory image made in order to maintain status quo politics. MAP: An Eye-Opening Experience

During Fall 2019, I had the opportunity to attend the AMHS annual Farmworker Reality Tour. This Tour consisted of meeting with the organization Center for Farmworker Families, an advocacy group fighting for legislative action and communal support for farmworkers. While on this trip, we heard from five strong women who shared their immigration stories. The women discussed their struggles with healthcare, transportation, immigration, and more. These brave and persistent women demonstrated their desire to overcome systemic oppression by providing the best opportunities for their children. Since then, vignettes of their daily struggles have…

Following the death of George Floyd, those demanding justice sparked a wave of public protests, social activism, and intervening mobilization. Unfortunately, Floyd’s case is not an anomaly, and the number of stories like his highlights how pervasive racism is within our law enforcement and America as a whole. You may be thinking, what do I, a second-generation Asian-American high schooler, have to do with this? Why do I care? Well, quite frankly, racism is an issue that must be confronted by everyone who lives in a system that perpetuates it. And America is such a system. I…

As grocery stores across the country have been running out of toilet paper, water, and flour in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, one thing that has remained in-stock and accessible in California stores is fresh produce. This is thanks to the tireless efforts of farmworkers who have continued to work through shelter-in-place orders and the fears of a pandemic, and were recently recognized as essential workers. …

The salty cheeks. The broken fists. The seething cynicism. It feels like one is trapped in some kind of medium where two polar opposites of rage and fear transform into something much worse: depression. The world and everything in it starts to become blurry like a patch of hoary grass. Those who are suffering with depression commonly feel distanced and unable to confront anyone because no one could possibly understand. Unfortunately, nothing could be farther from the truth. With one in five Californians suffering from a mental illness and 85% of college students feeling overwhelmed with stress…

The effects of COVID-19 are weighing heavily on the mental health of thousands across the globe. People everywhere are not only living in fear of contracting the virus and becoming ill, but they are also facing other pressures such as unemployment, financial hardships, and loneliness. All these factors contribute to escalation of an already endemic problem: suicide.

“U.S. Gun Death Rates Varied Widely.” Pew Research Center, Pew Research Center, 16 Aug. 2020, www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/08/16/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/ft_19-08-14_gundeaths_3_2/.

Though necessary, the shelter-in-place order prevents citizens from continuing their established routines, which gives a rise to a sense of loss and disillusionment, especially if they are navigating these new circumstances alone. And that’s the dangerous crux…

As the school year comes to a close, MAP is forced to say goodbye to our beloved seniors, who will be graduating and beginning a new chapter of their lives. Each and every one of them has contributed to building MAP into the amazing program that it is. Our seniors have devoted their time and dedication, which has been greatly appreciated by everyone. The Class of 2020 has helped to lead and inspire so many at Mitty and they will all be missed next year. While we couldn’t celebrate their efforts with the traditional Senior Day festivities…

The world is a dangerous place, with or without guns. As COVID-19 rages across the globe, more and more individuals flock to grocery stores to stock up on essentials such as canned food, flour, and toilet paper, risking their health and the health of others during these unprecedented times. Yet, millions of citizens are also crowding around gun and ammunition stores, deemed “essential businesses” by gun supporters. Stockpiling and panic buying, individuals are making sure they have enough ammunition in case the government and police cannot protect the people from riots and looting (NPR)…
